The Stadium School is a public school designed and operated in collaboration with teachers and parents. With a consensus approach to making decisions, teachers are empowered to write their own curriculum to promote connected learning between subject areas and project development. Students experience traditional models of learning as well as experiential, enabling them to learn in the classroom and in their community.
Shanice Williams is carefully executing the details in a painting of her favorite room in the Evergreen House. An eighth-grader at the Stadium School, Shanice chose to be a member of the Cultural Exchange Project Class, which meets once a week for a full day of experiential learning. As a group, Cultural Exchange attended a tour of the Evergreen Historic Home Museum and had the opportunity to create a piece in reflection of their visit.
In collaboration with several area schools and community members, an exhibit will hang throughout the historic rooms of the Evergreen. Features will include drawings, paintings, photography, and writings created in response to Evergreen encounters.
This year at the Stadium School, creative venues for students have increased. The first Art Project Class was formed in the fall, providing students the opportunity to explore creative potential, develop problem-solving skills, and experience hands-on visual learning. Students were also able to participate in three different art after-school programs, each offered once a week: Comic Book Club, Mosaic/Painting, and Clay. Through these programs, the young people are provided a stimulating and safe environment during after-school hours. In addition, they are strengthening friendships through their mutual interest in art and experiencing creative teamwork.
